As a young man during the 20's, my father went on the harvest excursions to western canada (Saskatchewan.) In those days the grain harvest was very labour intensive and workers would come from all over the country to work. He took many pictures of those big steam tractors and they were pretty awesome machines. I doubt they were very efficient,but I think they burned straw so fuel would be inexpensive.
