If you factor in the human labor involved in operating a steam engine, you come up with around 0% efficiency in my world. I have helped out with a model steamer at a show, splitting the wood to keep it burning, and that was a LOT of work! Factor in the midwest plains where there are no trees, and no water and you have a pretty obsolete piece of equipment.

Much improvement over straight elbow grease and horses, but kerosene, distillate, gasoline, and finally diesel engines are FAR more efficient and easier to operate. It takes an "engineer" to operate a steamer and almost anyone can run a Farmall H.
