It'll be WHITE if it's using much water. Black is running too rich, blue, like wrenchman said, is oil. There can be a tremendous leak because of the crack, and no white steam. Depends where the crack is and if it's leaking to the combustion chamber. You can also crack and loosen the oil drain to check for water. Any amount at all will come out before the oil, water is heavier than oil and sits on the bottom. Generally if there's no water getting to the oil or combustion it' fine unless it's leaking externally.
