Why disc before plowing, unless the previous crop was corn with heavy stubble, and your plow cannot handle the residue? Discing after plowing is not necessary, unless that is the only implement you have, or if the previous crop was hay and sod chunks need to be cut up. Many farmers use only a field cultivator after plowing for seedbed preparation, but that depends on local custom and machine availability. Use of a cultipacker depends on soil type, although in any soil, its use does reduce the amount of seed required, since germination is increased with its use. If you have a lot of clay, the cultipacker is a wise choice for breaking up clumps. I normally plow, FC it twice, and seed with a grain drill with a cultipacker behind. Instead of 15-18 pounds alfalfa per acre without the cultipacker, I seed 12 pounds with the cultipacker and get just as good a stand.
