Any undertaking of this sort is hazardous. Chains are safer than cables or the "stretchy" tow straps. Anything that stretches stores kinetic energy and if released suddenly will act like a slingshot. Don't try to jerk the chains. Just a steady pull will minimize the hazards to yourself and also minimize the possibility of damage to your tractor. Be prepared at all times to release the clutch instantly. Use the the least throttle possible and lowest gear.
