Question on Oil Filter Assembly

My MF135 gas has the old style canister oil filter with internal replaceable element (not spin-on type). Does the spring go next to the block, or at the top of the canister? Does the flat washer on the spring go toward the element or away from it? I've looked thru my operator's manual and the I&T Service manual- can't find any diagram or notation of this anywhere. I assume the spring would allow the oil to bypass if the filter was too clogged? Any help here would be appreciated.
