john deere lawn tractor

have found a jd 312 tractor at a used car lot..has a front grader blade on it..cosmetically looks good..they say it runs good..i need a small tractor to spread sand..would this 12 hp tractor be strong enough for that job? they're asking $1850 for it...feel that is too much for a tractor that old but can't find any pricing online to help me..if anyone can give me advice about this tractor i would really appreciate it..
