Sorry compression ratio is also the expansion ratio. That's why a high compression engine can extract more energy than low compression from the same btu's of fuel. Long stroke or short stroke doesn't matter, if the compression ratio is only 4 to 1 the burning gases expand less than 4 times before the exhaust valve vents pressure. So a seven to one engine can let the burnt high pressure gases push up to 7 times expansion. This is why steam engines had compound low pressure cylinders added for more efficiency after the high pressure cylinders. Sometimes turbines where even added after the piston engines to make full use of the pressure vented from the piston cylinder.
