Gear up and throttle back works for gasoline engines too as long as you don't overdo it. I would not run at less than 50-75% of full rpm if pulling a mid to heavy load. Kind of a rule of thumb is if you gear up and throttle back,you should be able to open the throttle and gain full rpm in a short time. If you open the throttle and gain rpm slowly or not at all you are lugging/overloading it too much. The throttle back gear up advice is for water cooled engines. Many air cooled engines need full rpm to get enough cooling.
