You need about 10% of the total loaded weight of the trailer on the tongue, to prevent wandering fishtailing and jack knifing, especially going down hill. An easy way to do this, on a standard hitch, is to measure the bumper height without trailer, then have some friends of known weght,stand on the bumper, say about 500lbs of friends, then measure the bumper drop. Repeat with 1000lbs of friends. Record these figures in your truck. You now have the correct bumper drop for a 5000lbs and a 10000lbs trailer load,estimate in between! This has always been close enough for a safe, comfortable trip for me. Be safe and relax, Mike
