Smoking David Brown 990

I have a 1971 David Brown 990 Selectamatic, it has done 6700 hours, has very little wear, runs and starts perfectly even in sub-zero without cold start knob turned, but smokes a lot on the over-run or under very little load. Open it up and it's fine when under load. Any ideas? I'm thinking it's fuel, but where should I start? - Many Thanks
