I use 3/8 chain- cuz that's the smallest I have. I think 5/16 would also be fine. Loads always tend to shift forward- angle your chains forward and rearward, actually only one binder is needed. Rear chain can be tightened by advancing the tractor, then binder the front chain, although it's handier to use a binder front and rear. Most important- drive a few miles and retighten- they always develop some slack. Also, like the other fellow says- balance the load slightly ahead of center to add a little tongue weight onto the tow vehicle, but not much. A well-balanced load tows with very little drag on the tow vehicle, because the trailer axles are carrying the load.
