Same experience here, and I use the same approach F14 does for filling diesel cans.

One comment: see if you can get "off-road" diesel. It's diesel fuel with a generous amount of red dye in it, but without the road taxes added to the price. It's less expensive than regular diesel, but it's not to be used in vehicles (big fine if caught).

One other thing...don't let that diesel run out of fuel if you can help it: it can damage the injection pump, and it can be a hassle to bleed the lines to get it cranked again.
