I NEED YOUR HELP!!!! Crankshaft Problem

This is my first motor job. Iv just installed my new short block to my 63 JD 1010. All went togather just fine, bolted it right up. However, when installing the water pump pulley the crankshaft started to turn. I thought maybe it was out of gear. To my suprise it was in first gear. The clutch feels OK. Please tell me what the deal is. Do I have something bad wrong with my instalation?? Why is the crankshaft turning when its in gear??
