The day we sold the old New Holland sqaure baler was one of the best days I had on the farm. Then came Hesston stackers and the shine went off of them pretty quick too . I grew up feeding and bedding 125 cows in Canada. Depending on the year, we might feed cows from October until sometime in May. Between 125 cows with calf at foot, 25 or 30 first calf heifers, the bulls, and a few feeders, we would have to put out approx. 4 tons of straw a day for bedding and about 3-5 tons of hay depending on the winter. Round bales were the best thing to ever happen to a cattle operation in Canada.
