Can someone explain..........

I just bought my first equipment trailer so I can haul my stuff. I have been asking anyone I can about brake controllers for electric brakes. Nobody I have talked with seems to understand how the new electronic units work. In the early '70s, last time I did any trailering, the controller was tapped into the hydraulic brake lines on the truck. This pressure, when pressing on the brake pedal, would move the controller arm across a reostat to modulate the voltage going to the trailer brakes, in proportion to the pressure on the trunk brakes. Can any of you technical types help me understand the new units? How do they know how hard I am trying to stop? Also, any advice on a specific make and model you know to be excellent quality? Thank you!
