Size of the operation is the major factor. Up north here (ND) it is almost exclusively large round bales. You need to remember that all stock is fed approx. 5 months out of the year up here, any winter grazing is very limited. Economics make it foolish to try and feed the number of small bales required. More would go to using large square balers if they weren't so cost prohibitive. Only small squares you will see up here is a few small dairies, sheep operations, or the hobby farmer with a hayburner or two (horses).
