welded starter case?

was cleaning up the old starter on my 440ic today and noticed the case was welded in the middle the length of the case, looks like it was a piece of flat stock rolled and welded together and then machined on the ends, i have a new starter and it is not this way, just wondering if anyone knows why they did this way on the orgional ones? thanks charles
