Plugs are fouling and the arcing increases the voltage available to fire the plug. This is what people used to do to old engines when they cut the spark plug wire and put a 4 hole button in it to create a spark gap/intensifier setup, it made the spark hotter, to keep the tip of the plug burned off,helped the spark voltage, but played heck with radio reception!! Very much running of a magneto ignition like the way you say yours ran better will cause the coil to have a melt-down failure, better to solve your plug fouling problem!
