Invest in some tiedowns that are adequate for the load. Always retighten the load after going a few (5?) miles. Even with 3/8 chain and binders, they always develop some slack early on. Just like freight in a truck, the load has a tendency to shift forward. I like chain better than nylon straps if a load with sharp edges is involved. Balancing the load just forward of centerline between the axles puts a bit of weight on the tongue, without getting excessive bumper weight, and the entire rig pulls well.
