I had the same situation. I disconnected the fuel line at the sediment bulb/shut off valve, and unscrewed this part from the tank. Both the tank and the sediment bowl housing can be cleaned. I poured gas into the tank catching it in a container underneath. I had to do this a couple of times. It will depend a lot on how dirty your gas tank is. Look into it with a good flashlight.
