You seem to have all of the facts but you have them confused a bit. Or at least the way you worded it made it sound confusing. The lead acts as a lubricant between the valves and the seats. That is why modern engines designed to use unleaded have hardened valve seats. The lead helps prevent valve seat recession in older engines with soft valve seats. To answer the original question, I have read previous posts on this subject and most people said that the lead substitutes were just kerosene and they tend to contribute to plug fouling. I have read a lot of magazine articles on this over the years and they all said if you dont work the engine hard often, you shouldn't have trouble. If you use this tractor regularly for heavy tillage or pto operation you should have hardened valve seats installed.
