871 ford selecto- speed

I am looking at buying a 871 selecto- speed tractor. I have been told that they have transmission and/or shift linkage problems. Can somebody tell me if this is actually true or not? The guy that told me of the problems has a tractor he wants to sell also. This makes me wonder if he told me this to try and get me to buy his tractor instead of the ford.
