I heard that sometimes if there is no charge the generator has to be polarized again by connecting it to a battery for a few seconds so the generator will work like an electric motor. It has to spin to the same direction as it will when used in charging. This has something to do with the remaining magnetism in the generator field coil. I think that the polarizing restores the small remaining magnetism in the field coil. When the anchor of the generator spins in a magnetic field it produces electricity. The amount of produced electricity depends on how strong the field is. The field coil is an electrical magnet that gets its power from the generator itself and there is no magnetism in the field at first when the generator starts to spin except the small remaining magnetism. This helps to produce a small current to the output which goes to the field coil and increases the field a little so the output current increases a little and so on. When the output voltage increases enough the regulator cut-off relay will let the output current go to the battery (some of this current still goes to the field). This all happens in a few seconds or less. This is how I have understood it. Maybe someone will explain this better and/or tell me that I'm wrong.
