Hi Mike, I have a 97 MF 231 and I have had excellcent service from it. Just got finished this weekend discing my garden and corn patch. It never has failed to start and has all the power I can use. If I had to find a fault with the 231 it would be the seat position and brake positions. The seat was too low for my 6 feet so I raised it with hardwood blocks. The brakes are positioned so that you must press down. They would be better if they were located forward. All in all, I would buy another 231. Finally, your price is good for a tractor with just a few hours. I recall that mine new was almost $12,000.00. Good luck.
