Did you hook the starter wire from the switch to the small terminal or the large terminal on the solenoid? If you hooked it to the large terminal on the starter side of the solenoid you were running all the current through the starter switch and not the solenoid. How heavy was the wire on the starter switch? Give a few more details and maybe others can help a little more. You can take the starter to your local rebuilder (starter/alternator) or NAPA store and they can test it. In my area it runs about $35 to $45 to get a starter (car or pickup excl dsls) completly rebuilt.
