Flywheel starting on JD's that were made to start by turning the wheel by hand isn't all that risky especially when compared to running PTO or belt driven machinery. The flywheel is made smooth on the outside and the only thing to remember is to not mount or dismount the tractor on the front of the axle when it is running.
