Some early crawlers, and stationary engines had the holes in the outside surface of the crank. To insert a bar, 4-6 ft. long,which pulled the flywheel over, but called Barring, or pulling the bar, the hole was chamfered to allow the bar to pull out when it fired. Still a flywheel start. Neighbor had a G and an A JohnDeere, when he got elderly, would run a flat belt from one tractor to the next to start that G. If done carefully, it did work.
