stuck in the mud

Went in the back woods to collect some sap and burried the tractor (36 hp IH) in the mud. Got her out with the help of the loader and branches but began to wonder why the tires are so useless in reverse. she will go anywhere in forward. I know MOST use is forward, but sometimes reverse is in order. Is there a better tire tread for reverse? Any tricks I should know?
