I don't claim to be an expert on this but here is my take on it owning two horizonal and 1 vertical exhaust tractor. The SM was always used in more open areas for the reasons stated in previous posts. It does a nice job of routing the fumes up and over your head when you are moving. The other two tractors are used for brush hogging and other work that requires low clearance. When I was small I always wanted to put a horizonal stack on the fergy because it would look cool. Dad always had to remind me what would happen when a low tree came along. Now I am old enough that I must remind my son of things like this. :) I guess the choice comes down to what you use the tractor for.
