Scott; Good response. The only thing I would differ with you on is that most lathes have a free standing motor, so even if it is a three phase, the motor can easily be changed instead of using a phase converter.
I would keep my options open as to size. Those nice 10 to 12 inch lathes are just what everyone wants for home use, making them relatively more expensive. If you have room for it, a larger one can usually be bought for the same or less money and will do everything the smaller one will do and more.
