From what I've read, the John Deere 720 had already just about kicked in the door. IH needed a real winner to stay ahead of the 730 and it's enhanced operator conveniences. Unfortunately, what they did instead was put the 6 cyl 263 cid and 283 cid truck engines in the same chassis (essentially) as the original 1939 M. The M was a 40hp tractor and the 560 had 60hp (before tuners turned them up) and it had real problems being stout enough to handle, reliably, under FIELD conditions, the hp that the engine (and they were GOOD engines) put out. When John Deere introduced the 4010 the following year, it so clearly outclassed the 560 that IH never recovered. At least their 4010 fighter, the 806, was properly developed and tested. THEY were very good mechanically even if John Deere still led by a ways in operator convenience, refinement, and ease of operation. The 560 HAD to be a big winner for IHC if the company was not to lose their top spot. Unfortunately, the 560 was NOT the big winner, so it carries a lot of blame for IHCs ultimate demise. JMHO!

To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the
