I hope you didn't blow something up when you disconnected the battery cable with the engine running. NEVER NEVER NEVER disconnect the battery cable with the engine running on any car with a computer controlled engine (81 and newer).
Your problem is most likely the manual switch on the headlight switch, since that car has a special module that will otherwise turn off the interior lights to keep the battery from running down if there is a problem with the door jamb switches, which are a part of the door latches on the Grand Am.
I hope you find the problem and can fix it easily.
