And when you convert a B/W picture to JPEG format, most of the time you will be given an option of "grayscale", might be called "black and white". Use that option, as it will give you a much smaller file with the same resultant image. However, if the picture is an old sepia toned picture, of course, this would get rid of the sepia tone, so you probably won't want to use it.
