Those are very valid points about safety. Ultimately, the best safety device is in the operator's head, and nothing can replace that. Unfortunately, even the most careful operator will occasionally have a lapse, or the unexpected event will occur. That's what the safety equipment is really about. The last statistics I saw were: Odds of escaping a tractor rollover without death or major injury, no ROPS, about 10% Odds of escaping a rollover without death or major injury, with ROPS, about 60%. Not perfect, but I'll take that extra 6X safety factor any day. I've spent most of my working life in and around the Timber industry, which one of the few occupations more dangerous than being a farmer. If you told a logger to get on a machine without ROPS protection he'd tell you where to go in pretty short order. But, I guess each of us has to decide where to take our chances. -- bbott
