Sickles are not painted when new and there's no need to oil them. The oil would not stay on any length of time and would just collect dirt and cause unnecesssary wear. There isn't much you need to do as far as the sickle itself is concerned. Keep it sharp, keep the sections tight, replace when necessary. Replace the guards as necessary as well as the ledger plates and make sure it is timed correctly. Go make hay, sickle mowers are a lot of fun to use.
