In the horse and wagon days, they packed the axles and such with lard,or axle grease. Later they had grease cups that you filled and screwed then in a turn or two, as you used the equipment. (stationary hit an miss engines have them)then they had "alemite fittings" (Model "T" days)they had two ears on the fitting which you attached the gunfitting to to hold it as you "greased it" then you have todays "Zerk"fitting.
