Hi Paul,
You joggled my memeory. The FBI uses nitric acid to lift serial numbers from guns that someone tried to remove them. Sand the metal smooth with 400grit finish then apply the nitic acid and the numbers raise to the surface, then use baking soda to neutrlize the nitric acid then restamp the numbers but if the new numbers are not aligned with the old numbers then you get jibberish when trying to raise them a second time.
