Steve, Been there done that! I am 47 years old and have one hearing aid and should have one in the other ear. Now, I am very careful about using hearing protection cuz I don't want to lose what little I have left. Trust me, you do not want a hearing aid. They are a pain in the ear to use but necessary. As a kid, I spent hours on the Oliver 1800 with a straight pipe shooting flames while plowing - man was it cool! I remember not being able to hear for an hour or two after running it for some time. Most of the people who should listen to your advice will not heed it (like me) until they begin losing their hearing, then they will use hearing protection - too late cuz by then the damage is done. I am continually amazed by the number of people who think nothing about running a chainsaw without hearing protection.
