Compression test is a good idea,but when were the valves last adjusted?I would try that first.White smoke sounds like head gasket is leaking maybe some water in combustion chamber somehow,but it might be you could try and tighten the head bolts,if you can,it might help.At least you would know what to look for if you did pull the head later.Grey smoke is an indication that the rings are worn out,black smoke means too much fuel,Diesels seem like they have a lot of blowby especially if they have a turbo,but when they start blowing smoke and oil out of the blowby tube,its time to think about rings.A little oil is allright,but when it steadily drips oil all the time and exhaust smoke comes out of the blowby tube,the dipstick looks rusty,oil is milky,all these tell you to tear it down before you do some real damage.Its about the same for a gas engine too,if its blowing oil out of the tube,smoking,fouling plugs,its about worn out.
