I would start with a compression test. Then go the to injectors, then the pump. My guess is your tractor suffers from low to no compression. Too many investigate this with the reverse order.
Lanova systems, your 88 has one, suffer from poor starting even when they are in top condition. The system is very inefficient, too much area to heat, requires ether even on a warm day.
White smoke could be water or coolant getting into combustion chamber, hang on on this one.
