The outer covering is to protect the insides. It doesn't actually do anything structural. One hose on my Ford cylinder peeled, ran it with the steel wires for a decade or more. Since it gets more moisture/abrasion/dirt it will wear out quicker. But replacing it is up to you. Does your AC run the higher pressure system with smaller diameter hoses? I would look through the farm supply stores first, premade hoses will be cheaper. Some hyd places really soak you for making hose, some have competitive prices... You should be able to get a pretty darn long hose for $20 unless it has unusual ends - swivels or something. --->Paul
