Your right about the sound of a 2 cylinder diesel, nothing sounds like the R and it is quite a workhorse. But $2,000 seems a lot for the repairs you stated. Third gear is a working gear both plowing and disking. Getting parts is not easy. It's hard to get new parts so most parts are from salvage yards. I've gotten parts from all over the country and Canada. If you check the photo ads there are usually a couple. Many have been reconditioned or restored and they are between $4,000 and $5,000. I paid $3,500 for mine and I now have over $6,000 in it.
