I agree with what Jon says but if you start and stop it several times and it charges, then the alt must have the self exciting regulator in it. the reason I say that is you might have accidently touched the white wire to the output terminal which is all it takes to make it charge when it is running, but that wouldn't happen more than once or twice at the most- accidently. If the white wire is not touching then the alt cannot self excite unless it has the self-exciting regulator-which you can rely on to work until they quit. -I did work for people that had 3- 1100-1135 Masseys that ran every day winter and summer and for some reason that style of regulator only would last about a year and then they would quit-don't know why,but we'd just put in another one and it would work for another year.
