I have also seen consignment sales where the owner of an item, which has an (unstated) reserve price, is allowed to bid, just as if he was a regular joe at the sale. He can bid up to the amount of his reserve. You don't know the reserve and don't know the guy is actually the owner. You bid $100, he bids $200, the reserve is $250. You think he bought it, when in fact, it didn't even sell. I don't know whether this is ethical or not, but I don't care for the practice.
