By "rag joint" I presume you mean a pair of flanges with some canvas in between? (Transmits rotation but allows axial and angular flex...) The Farmall tranny shaft coupling works sorta like that, only the center element is a steel stamping instead of a piece fabric. A small amount of axial and rotational motion is permitted by the rubber bushings. It's really pretty simple once you get it apart.
