Torque is foot-pounds while horsepower is foot-pounds per second. Think about muscle strength (torque) and muscle endurance (horsepower). Strength (torque) is the ability to lift a certain amount of weight. Endurance (horsepower) is the ability to hold that weight for a length of time. See Howstuffworks.com for more info. Read through some of the articles there and I think you may better understand it. Here is another page on torque vs horsepower to read. Steven
