I reclaimed about 2.5 or 3 acres of old pasture that had grown over to alders so think ya couldn't drive a rabbit through 'em. Nice thing about alders is that they rot quick. If you cut 'em all down with a chainsaw (as close to the ground as possible) and then keep the sprouts cut off with the rotary mower, the roots/stumps will die within a year, and rot to below ground level in 2 years. Bad thing about alders is they'll come back in 6 months if you leave any viable roots in the ground and don't keep them cut. I was in a hurry to reclaim my pasture, and happen to have a backhoe, so I dug up all the stumps and stacked them. The topsoil had been mined off the area (thanks to my FIL) and the stumps came up with a lot of clay mud on them. I left them in a stack for 2-3 years, turning the pile over with my bucket loader occasionally and cleaning up the dirt that the rain washed off them over time and using it for fill. This fall, I burned the pile. I still see little shoots coming up from bits and pieces left in the ground by this process, but the sheep think that's candy and nibble it right off. To make a long story short, if you cut 'em short, mow the sprouts and graze the piece, you'll be all set.
