Myrna, if its been setting a long time, it likely has carboned up dirty maybe partially clogged injectors. Because of that, the injectors spray more of a raw liquid fuel into the cylinders as opposed to a fine mist atomized fuel which combusts better. The black smoke is unburned fuel. Also, the rings may be carboned up a bit and not expanding in and out freely in the piston ring grooves. So, what to do???? I would drain all filters and fuel and refill with new good clean premium diesel first and be sure and bleed all air out. Then, I would buy the best diesel fuel injector cleaner additive I could find and add plenty to the new clean fuel in the tank. Then, I would change the engine oil and filter and add something like Rislone or Marvel Mystery Oil to the crankcase which helps to clean the engine and rings etc. DO NOT add anything like STP an oil thickener, you need to add a solvent cleaner like Rislone or something to clean things out. Then, take it out and put it under a good long heavy sustained load and really work it hard. If that doesnt cure the problem, it may be time to have the injectors and rack professionally cleaned and serviced and the injection timing set properly. Good Luck, let us know how you come out.
