Jake has a good point. Go direct to an owner. As a point of free advice (and worth every penny!) I'd recommend starting out with something small, simple and easy to work on. Examples (based on brands I know a little about, there are others) would be a Ford 2N/8N/9N, Farmall Cub/A/B, John Deere H or B or similar sized tractors of other brands. Gas is easier to work on (and more common in pre-1960 tractors) than diesel. Parts are reasonably available for the ones I mentioned, and they're simple enough that the average shade tree mechanic can figure out most things. This board, and other brand-specific boards are a BIG help on solving problems and finding parts. Enjoy!
